That is the type cults want. So they do not seem like cults to new

Going back to just before i got to usenet, Heaven Gate's people
were on the net. Some of the people i spoke to were emailling anyone from
that group they could find, pleading with them to not kill themselves.
Trying to get someone in authority to the compound before it was too late,
then when the news did hit make sure everyone got the message. The stories
back then were horrific, beyond what you could imagine as a rational
person. I still talk to one of those people now and then and the story
still haunts them. In his case survivors guilt, i imagine anyways...
You know we get accused of so many things on usenet, being
bullies, making fun of people belief's, attacking the helpless...
hopeless? etc but if in just one case we wake one follower from take the
kool-aid then we have won. If just one person gives their belief just one
second thought then we have made a gain in this world.
There are too many cults, Solar Temple, Heavens Gate and on and
on... Rael being another group, nuttty nancy being another, filled with
people who will or have walked down the Jim Jones path. They either are
technophobes ie no internet or for many new cults Internet friendly. We
cannot do much for the non tech but we can keep up a wall of opposition to
the tech'ers and their recruitment over the net. Aside from the fun of it,
giving flak to the latest kook claim, it undermines the strengh of cults.
